The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially released the academic calendar for basic schools—comprising Kindergarten (KG), Primary, and Junior High School (JHS)—for the 2025/2026 academic year. The calendar outlines the term dates, vacation periods, and examination schedules, ensuring a smooth and well-structured academic year for both students and teachers across the country.
Term Dates for KG – JHS 2
The academic year will begin on 2nd September 2025 for Kindergarten through to JHS 2, with the First Term running for 15 weeks, ending on 18th December 2025. This will be followed by a vacation period from 19th December 2025 to 6th January 2026.
The Second Term starts on 8th January 2026 and runs until 1st April 2026, making it a 12-week term. Students will enjoy a short break from 2nd to 19th April 2026.
The Third Term will begin on 21st April 2026 and end on 23rd July 2026, bringing the academic year to a close. The official end of the academic year is slated for 24th July 2026.
Academic Calendar for JHS 3
The structure for JHS 3 is similar in the first two terms. Students will report to school on 2nd September 2025 and break for the First Term on 18th December 2025, with vacation from 19th December 2025 to 6th January 2026. The Second Term runs from 8th January to 1st April 2026, followed by vacation from 2nd to 19th April 2026.
However, the academic calendar for JHS 3 differs in the Third Term, as it accommodates preparations for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). JHS 3 students will resume on 21st April 2026, and the BECE is scheduled for 4th to 11th May 2026.
Additional Notes
All public holidays will be observed in accordance with national regulations. The calendar also includes a two-day mid-term break for each term, with the first term mid-term break scheduled from 31st October to 3rd November 2025.
