Guidelines for GES Staff Members to Qualify for Study Leave With Pay

Minimum Years of Service and other Conditions Required for Teachers to Qualify for Time Off to Pursue Further Education While Still Receiving Salary.

A study leave with pay in the teaching fraternity refers to a period of time when a teacher is granted leave from their regular teaching duties to pursue further education, training or research in their field, with the assurance of continued payment during their absence. This means that the teacher is given time away from the classroom to focus on their studies or research, while still receiving their salary.

To qualify for Study Leave With Pay, a GES staff member must serve a minimum of three (3) years of satisfactory service. Upon completion of the study leave, the beneficiary must serve a bond for the number of years served at the institution plus one (1) year.

However, staff who have served in designated deprived areas for at least two (2) years may be eligible for Study Leave With Pay. Additionally, non-professional graduate teachers must have served for at least one (1) year before being eligible for any of the Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) course.

Staff members returning from secondment must serve a minimum of two (2) years before becoming eligible for Study Leave With Pay. Similarly, staff members who vacate or leave the service and are later re-appointed or re-engaged must serve a minimum of five (5) years before being eligible for Study Leave With Pay.

Eligible staff members must have a minimum of two (2) years to serve after the course. For instance, staff members who are 55 years and above cannot apply for Study Leave With Pay to pursue a course lasting four (4) years or more. However, they can apply to pursue a course lasting between one (1) and three (3) years.

To be eligible for Study Leave With Pay, a staff member must have good conduct and performance and be recommended by their immediate supervisor. To apply, staff members should obtain application forms from the Metro/Municipal/District Education Offices, complete four copies of the application form, and attach certified true copies of their certificates. They should then submit the application to their Regional Director through the Metro/Municipal/District Director/Head of Institution (2nd Cycle).

Finally, the Regional/District Directors should ensure that the list of all fully qualified beneficiaries reaches the Human Resources Management and Development (HRMD) at G.E.S Headquarters.
