New National Farmers' Day Award to Honour Basic and Second Cycle Institutions

Ghana's Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has unveiled a new, specific initiative aimed at basic and second-cycle educational institutions. Speaking on the Citizen Show on Accra 100.5 FM on Friday, August 22, 2025, the Minister said the Ministry will introduce a new award category for the annual National Farmers' Day celebration to recognize schools that demonstrate excellence in agriculture.

This award is designed to highlight and encourage the vital role of young people in Ghana's farming sector. The initiative goes beyond a simple recognition, as the farm produce of the winning schools will be showcased on national television. This public display will not only celebrate the achievements of the students but also inspire others to consider agriculture as a viable and important career path.

This strategic focus on youth is a key component of the government's broader "24-hour economy" policy, which aims to boost food production and ensure a more stable food supply, ultimately helping to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians.
